Swim between the flags, and respect the rip

Australian beaches have strong rip currents, and the red-and-yellow flags mark the patrolled zone where lifeguards watch; most drownings happen outside them. If caught in a rip, float, raise an arm, and let it carry you; it won't pull you under. In Queensland, box jellyfish and Irukandji make the sea dangerous north of about Gladstone from November to May; swim in the stinger nets or wear a suit. Crocodile warning signs in the north are serious.
