Don’t skip a place because it looks too small or has no English menu outside. Some of my favorite late dinners in Tokyo have been at counters with ten or twelve seats.

The smaller backstreets are better than the main roads if you like old houses and quiet corners. Go in the late afternoon when the light hits the walls.
