Baksheesh: small tips everywhere, so carry small notes

Egypt runs on baksheesh: a few pounds for the man who opens a tomb for you, the toilet attendant, the hotel porter, the boat boy. It isn't a scam, it's the wage system, and refusing all of it makes life harder; carry a stack of small notes and give small amounts gladly. For bigger services, a guide or a driver for a day, 10% or a round sum at the end is standard. ATMs give large notes; break them at a supermarket early.
