Beer costs less than water, and the pub is the dining room

In a Czech hospoda, a half liter of Pilsner-style lager is often cheaper than a bottle of water, and the server will keep bringing refills until you put the beer mat on top of your glass. Order svíčková (beef in cream sauce with dumplings), goulash, or fried cheese (smažený sýr), and expect dumplings, not bread. Lunch menus ("polední menu") are the budget meal. Tip by rounding up to about 10% and saying the total.
