Warungs, nasi campur, and the sambal warning

A warung is a small family eatery, and it's where Indonesian food is best and cheapest: nasi campur (rice with a choice of dishes from the display), nasi goreng, sate, and in Bali babi guling (roast pork). Padang restaurants from Sumatra bring every dish to the table and charge only for what you eat. Sambal chili paste varies from mild to ferocious; taste before you spoon. Drink bottled or refilled filtered water, never tap.
