Montreal: bagels, smoked meat, and the BYOB restaurants

Montreal bagels are smaller, sweeter, and wood-fired; St-Viateur and Fairmount in Mile End bake around the clock. Smoked meat on rye at Schwartz's has a line; the equally good counters nearby don't. Many restaurants on the Plateau and in Little Italy are "apportez votre vin": you bring your own wine from the SAQ store and pay no corkage. Poutine is best late at night from a casse-croûte. Tipping is 15–18% in restaurants and bars.
