Scooter rentals: the license, the helmet, and the police stops

Renting a scooter in Bali is cheap and the police checkpoints near Canggu and Kuta know it: you need an international driving permit with a motorcycle category plus your home license, and a helmet, or you'll pay an on-the-spot fine. Many travel insurance policies won't cover scooter accidents without the right license. Traffic is chaotic and the roads are potholed; if you've never ridden, Bali isn't the place to learn. Grab and Gojek bikes and cars are cheap alternatives.
