Zermatt: no cars, and the Matterhorn hides by noon

Zermatt is car-free; you leave the car in Täsch and take the shuttle train. The Matterhorn is usually clear in the early morning and wrapped in cloud by midday in summer, so the Gornergrat train and the Sunnegga lift are best taken first thing. The Glacier Express from Zermatt to St. Moritz is a slow, scenic eight hours; the same scenery costs far less on the regular trains along the same tracks, in segments, with no reservation.
