Braai, bunny chow, and the Cape winelands at lunch
The braai (barbecue) is the national pastime; boerewors sausage and lamb chops over wood, with pap (maize porridge) and chakalaka. Bunny chow, curry in a hollowed-out loaf, is Durban's Indian heritage. The winelands of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, an hour from Cape Town, have excellent restaurants on the estates and tastings that cost a few dollars; lunch on a terrace with a view is the Cape at its best. Biltong, the dried meat, is the road-trip snack. Tipping is 10–15%.
