In the souks, prices aren't fixed; the opening figure is often two or three times what a seller will take. Decide what the item is worth to you, offer well below it, and settle somewhere in the middle, with humor; walking away is part of the process, and you can always come back. Fixed-price places (the Ensemble Artisanal in major cities, cooperatives) show you a baseline. Don't bargain for food, taxis with a meter, or in supermarkets.
