Venice: the day-trip fee, and the water bus timing

Venice now charges day visitors an access fee on peak dates, booked online; overnight guests are exempt but need a registered exemption. The vaporetto water buses are expensive per ride, so a multi-day pass makes sense if you'll ride more than twice a day. Walk instead where you can; nothing in the historic center is more than 40 minutes on foot. Avoid the restaurants with photo menus around San Marco.
