Frites from a frituur, beer in its own glass, and waffles that aren't on sticks
Belgian fries are double-fried and sold from a "frituur" or "friterie" with a dozen sauces; Antwerp's and Brussels' best are ordinary stands with long lines. Every beer has its own glass, and the bartender will wait for the right one; a Trappist or a lambic from a brown café beats the tourist "beer menus." A real Liège waffle is dense and caramelized, sold plain from a cart; the Brussels one is light and eaten with a fork. The chocolate-covered, cream-piled waffles on sticks are for tourists.
