Fondue is a winter dish, and lunch is the cheap meal

Cheese fondue and raclette are mountain winter food; locals don't eat them in July, though restaurants will serve them. Rösti is the national potato dish, and each region has its own cheese and sausage. Restaurant lunch menus ("Tagesmenü") are far cheaper than dinner. Tipping is not expected; service is included, and rounding up a franc or two is polite. Shops close on Sundays except at railway stations and airports.
