Porto: the port lodges across the river, and the beach at the end of the tram

Cross the Dom Luís I bridge on the lower deck to Vila Nova de Gaia, where the port wine lodges run tastings; the smaller houses are cheaper and less crowded than the big names. Back in Porto, the old tram line 1 follows the river out to Foz do Douro, where the city meets the Atlantic, with a beach and sunset bars. Livraria Lello charges admission for the staircase; the São Bento station's tile panels are free and just as photogenic.
