The Heuriger: wine taverns at the edge of the city
A Heuriger is a wine tavern run by a winemaker who sells their own young wine, marked by a bundle of pine branches hung over the door when it's open. In Vienna they cluster in Grinzing, Nussdorf, and Stammersdorf, reachable by tram; the quieter ones are in Stammersdorf. You buy wine by the quarter liter and help yourself to cold food from the counter, paid by weight. Go on a summer evening and stay until the garden empties.
